In Skara Brae necklaces and
other pieces of jewellery were worn. This jewellery was made from beads and animals such
as fish, birds, whales and walrus bones, teeth and tusks. Beads were found scattered
down a hallway and was interpreted by excavators to be the result of a fast and urgent
exit possibly because of a catastrophe.

Skara Brae artefacts include small pottery items such as paint pots. These little pots were made from substances such as shell, stone and whale bone. Inside the ancient pottery the residue of reddish coloured ochre can clearly be seen. The fact that ochre was found in these paint pots makes us wonder if they could have used it for body art.
The Skara Brae community's art included both practical and non-practical artefacts such as jewellery (necklaces, beads, pendants and pins), pottery (paint pots) and mysterious stone balls. Artefacts were made from animal parts like teeth and bones and also from both shells and stones. Ivory pins were created from walrus tusks. Some of the art objects were covered in carved symbols and 'runic writings' .
